Upon notification or discovery that an ordinance violation exists, the Code Enforcement Department will follow this general outline.
1) A code enforcement case is opened, assigned to a Code Officer and is given a case number, for example EN14-0001.
2) Our Code Officer will visit the property to ascertain the nature of the violation and will attempt to speak with the property owner. If the property owner is not available, the officer will leave a Courtesy Notice with a description of the violation.
It is important to note, that the officer must be able to personally view the violation from the public street or driveway. It may be necessary to provide the Code Officer with consent to enter your property to view the violation.
3) A Compliance Re-check is generally scheduled for 1 week from the initial visit.
4) If violation remains, a Code Compliance letter is sent with a deadline to correct the issue (generally 2 weeks).
5) If violation still remains, a Citation may be issued or a Final Code Compliance Request letter is sent depending on the circumstances of the case. In some cases, extensions are granted if reasonable efforts have been made towards compliance.
6) If a citation has been issued, the responsible person(s) shall be required to appear at the 48th District Court.
Our goal is to achieve compliance through mutual cooperation with property owners. Issuance of a citation is always our last resort in this effort.
