Project Plan Set

Project Description

  • The RCOC, in cooperation with West Bloomfield Township, will reconstruct Orchard Lake Road between Northwestern Highway and Maple Road as a four-lane boulevard this year.
  • The project will provide improved traffic flow and safety, a smooth new roadway and enhanced aesthetics for the corridor.
  • During the project, one lane of Orchard Lake Road will remain open in each direction with a center left-turn lane.
  • Access to all  businesses along this section of Orchard Lake Road will be maintained at all times.
  • Utility relocation work will take place prior to the start of construction and may result in intermittent lane closures.

Project Background

  • The project will involve the complete reconstruction of the road from its current five-lane configuration to a concrete, divided boulevard with a grassy median. The boulevard is a safer design because it eliminates direct left turns, thus reducing the likelihood of broadside collisions.
  • The new boulevard will begin where the current boulevard ends just north of Northwestern Highway and continue north to just south of Maple Road.
  • The project includes the elimination of the service drives along the east side of Orchard Lake Road as well as the construction of eight-foot-wide pedestrian paths along both sides.
  • Also included are updated pedestrian crosswalks complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and drainage improvements throughout the corridor.
  • Powers Road will be closed for a short time at Orchard Lake Road while the Powers/Orchard Lake Road intersection is realigned. During that time, the detour route for Powers Road traffic will be Daly Road to Maple Road to Orchard Lake Road and vice versa.
  • The project is expected to cost $7.2 million. Of that amount, $5 million will be paid for with federal funds and the remainder will be split between RCOC and West Bloomfield Twp.
