|The State of Michigan enacted the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Public Act 442 of 1976 (MCL 15.231 et seq.), which became effective April 13, 1977. Section 15.231 states, “It is the public policy of this state that all persons, except those incarcerated in state or local correctional facilities, are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts of those who represent them as public officials and public employees, consistent with this act. The people shall be informed so that they may fully participate in the democratic process.”
The Clerk’s office acts as the coordinator for all FOIA requests received of the Township, except for Police and Fire departments which may also be requested directly from their respective department(s) whose contact information is listed below. Individuals or organizations asking for information of the Township may complete a FOIA FORM and submit it to the Clerk’s office for distribution to the appropriate department(s) that maintain the information requested. The Township has five (5) business days to respond to the request with the option to extend the response time to ten (10) days if the request requires additional time for response. FOIA also allows for the public body to establish a reasonable fee schedule for reproducing and providing the requested documents.
The FOIA application, as well as other forms and documents, are available below. On the FOIA application or email submission, you must supply a name and contact information for the requestor, as well as a detailed description of the documents requested. A West Bloomfield Township employee will contact you if the request requires a deposit. You will also be contacted once your request has been completed.
